Operations manager: responsibilities
At Lanes Group, we pride ourselves on delivering a high standard of service to around 15 million customers across the UK, and the role of operations manager is designed to ensure those standards are continually upheld.
Operations managers work alongside the senior leadership team to ensure the smooth running of day-to-day operations. You will be responsible for the planning and organisation of the engineers’ activities, making sure that all members of staff are provided with the correct equipment and information to complete their work safely, efficiently and within an acceptable time period.
They are also in charge of company vehicles and plants within assigned depots, working with the transport division to make sure that all the necessary equipment is calibrated and serviced correctly, so it is ready to be used when needed.
Although this is predominantly an office-based placement, the operations manager role may require you to travel to various external sites across the UK to help coordinate pre-planned and reactive emergency work, and to carry out essential quality assurance checks and health and safety inspections.
Experienced managers are likely to thrive in this role, and it could also be ideal for those who have previously held a supervisory position and are looking to progress into management for the first time.
Salary and working conditions
Because this is a highly skilled position that requires staff to take on considerable responsibility, Lanes Group is prepared to offer a generous and competitive salary, with rates of pay scaling according to the candidate’s credentials and experience. As an organisation, we’re also dedicated to progression and development opportunities, so you can anticipate plenty of scope to increase your earning power over time.
However, there’s more to working with Lanes than a pay cheque; we’re known for going the extra mile to provide perks and benefits that help our employees thrive within our organisation. All members of staff will receive access to an optional company-wide health scheme, a workplace pension and childcare vouchers, plus free car parking across 80% of our depots and offices.
Operations managers will also receive a basic holiday entitlement of 23 days of paid leave plus bank holidays, with the potential to extend this up to a maximum of 26 days. In addition, a company van will be made available to help managers travel between sites as part of their work. This all comes as part of Lanes Group’s ongoing dedication to providing a friendly and supportive working environment to help all of our staff feel valued.
Skills, qualifications and experience
Operations management is a complex and demanding role, so we require applicants to demonstrate a degree of relevant prior experience to ensure they are able to hit the ground running and handle the full range of responsibilities they will be asked to take on.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate past success in a management or supervisory role, and expertise leading and liaising with different members of an operations team.
Previous experience in the drainage and utilities sector is preferred, and we assess applicants on their ability to schedule work to ensure maximum productivity and optimum asset usage; this means that excellent IT skills and a proficiency with Microsoft’s full suite of business software are also essential.
As such, individuals whose previous placements include roles in the following disciplines may be particularly well-suited to this position:
- Operations management
- Engineering
- Maintenance
- Health and safety
- Maintenance management
- Reactive maintenance
- Construction
- Facilities maintenance and management
