Depot managers: job responsibilities involved
Our depot managers are responsible for ensuring that sales, costing and controlled spending goals are achieved to enable the operating teams to meet customer demand, hit productivity targets and reach expected profit levels, working with the area development manager at the depot. They will develop a high-performing, motivated, disciplined and positive team that is respected across the business.
In the depot manager job, you’ll need to demonstrate good people management skills, as well as a passion for delivering an exceptional service to our customers. Your key responsibilities will be to maintain operational performance and provide effective leadership in the daily planning and running of the depot.
Depot managers must ensure that all operational standards and procedures within the depot are carried out effectively, including the proper filing of relevant documentation; this ensures that information is correctly recorded, and that any customer complaints are dealt with effectively.
You’ll also be tasked with:
- identifying and managing personnel development needs

- setting appropriate objectives
- identifying issues
- and ensuring management processes are executed appropriately to achieve resolution
This will be achieved while working closely with relevant business partners within the support functions to implement and drive policies, procedures and business initiatives.
Salary and working conditions
This is a highly skilled position that requires staff to take on considerable responsibility, so Lanes Group is prepared to offer a generous and competitive salary, with rates of pay scaling according to the candidate’s credentials and experience. As an organisation, we are also dedicated to progression and development opportunities, so you can anticipate plenty of scope to increase your earning power over time.
This role entitles you to the use of a company car, as well as 23 days’ paid holiday a year, plus bank holidays. If you stay with the business for an extended period, this can rise to 26 days, underlining our dedication to rewarding loyalty and long-term career development.
Moreover, all employees will receive access to an optional company-wide health scheme, a workplace pension and childcare vouchers, plus free car parking across 80% of our network of depots and offices. We believe there is more to working with Lanes than a pay cheque, which is why we’re known for going the extra mile to provide industry-leading perks and benefits to help our employees really thrive within our organisation.
Skills, qualifications and experience
Applicants for a depot manager job role will be expected to have prior management and leadership experience, including proven success in heading up teams. They must also be willing to lead by example and adopt a practical, hands-on approach when required, and to show an aptitude for working within a fast-paced environment, with a well-developed approach to prioritisation and organisation.
The ideal candidate will possess good financial acumen, with a background of success in meeting and exceeding targets and delivering an outstanding client experience, along with the ability to manage profits and achieve targets.
IT literacy and a knowledge of health and safety are also essential, as is a full driving licence. Although this is predominantly an office-based role, our depot managers will be required to attend various external sites to engage with customers and clients, as well as occasional company meetings.
Future prospects
At Lanes Group, we’re dedicated to giving our employees the opportunity to build a lengthy and fulfilling career within the Lanes family, and are committed to investing in staff members to make this a reality. That’s why our depot managers can expect to receive a broad range of dynamic development opportunities, allowing them to achieve the long-term professional fulfilment that many are seeking.
They will be given regular training to help them acquire additional skills and competencies over time, while benefiting from the dynamism that comes with being part of a team that includes more than 2,200 people spread across 25 regional depots and utility hubs throughout Great Britain. This gives us the opportunity to offer long-term career planning and job security for our employees, and ensures that no two days are ever the same at Lanes.
The principle of diversity is also at the heart of our ongoing effort to position ourselves as an equal opportunities employer, welcoming all applications from underrepresented areas of the community. No matter your background, you’ll be given the same chance to succeed at Lanes Group.
