An apprenticeship is an exciting way to gain hands-on experience while earning a salary. However, with so many different types of apprenticeships available, it can get confusing to understand what kind of qualifications you need to qualify for a place.
This guide explores the general requirements for the different UK apprenticeships, and for those of you with an interest in getting into the engineering and drainage sector, we’ll also point you toward some of the exciting opportunities we have to offer here at Lanes.
Apprenticeships in the UK are available across various levels:
Since February 2025, the UK government has made it more accessible for individuals aged 19 and over to complete apprenticeships by removing the mandatory requirement to achieve Level 2 English and Maths qualifications. This change is designed to open doors for many people looking to get into high-demand industries like healthcare and construction.
However, if you're aged between 16 and 18, you will still need to complete these English and Maths components as part of your apprenticeship. Regardless of age, having strong skills in these areas is something that will benefit you throughout your life.
Additionally, apprenticeships often include National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), which are practical, work-based awards that demonstrate your competence in a specific profession. Completing an NVQ as part of your apprenticeship means you get a nationally recognised qualification - something that will stand out on your CV.
Being able to learn new skills is important for your future - but apprenticeships, like any job, are also about earning the money you need to support yourself today. Currently, the UK government has set the hourly minimum wage for apprentices at £7.55.
It's important to note that many employers recognise the contribution apprentices bring to the table, and offer wages above these minimum requirements. Of course, should you do well in your training, there’s often potential for you to progress in your career - and increase your earnings too.
Lanes Group is one of the UK’s leading providers of drainage and utility solutions, offering apprenticeship opportunities that combine practical experience with structured learning. Whether you're looking for hands-on technical training or a route into an office-based career, Lanes provides industry-recognised qualifications and the support you need to succeed.
We believe in investing in giving our apprentices plenty of guidance and resources so they can thrive in their new career. Our apprenticeships provide the opportunity to earn qualifications that are recognised across the drainage and utilities sector, so you can build a solid foundation for long-term success. We see apprenticeships as more than just a job - they’re a chance to develop real skills, gain valuable qualifications and establish a career in a supportive and fast-paced industry.
