Once you’ve passed your practical driving test, completed your Driver CPC and secured your HGV licence, the road ahead opens for your driving career.
However, there's such a diverse range of HGV roles across the UK, from long-distance haulage to local deliveries and specialist infrastructure work. Each type of HGV job suits different strengths, depending on how you want to work and what you want from your career.
At Lanes Group, we speak to many drivers at this stage. Some are newly qualified, others are experienced HGV drivers looking for a change. Most are asking the same question: what are the different types of HGV driving jobs...and which one is right for me?
Here, the Lanes Group recruitment team explains the different types of HGV work, to help you choose what kind of role would best suit your interests and career plans.
Before choosing between roles, it helps to understand how different HGV drivers approach the job.
Some drivers prefer to spend extended periods on the road, focusing on long-distance driving and transporting goods between distribution centres. Others want a more active working day, with local deliveries, customer interaction and a faster pace.
There are also drivers who want more from their role than driving alone - combining HGV driving with practical work, teamwork and the chance to build new skills. The key is understanding which type of driving job fits your strengths, whether that is independence, routine, physical work or problem-solving.
Most HGV roles tend to fall into a few broad categories, each offering a different way of working.
One of the most recognised types of HGV work is long-distance haulage.
These roles involve transporting goods across long-haul routes, often between warehouses, distribution centres and supply chains. Drivers may operate articulated lorries (Category C+E / Class 1) or rigid vehicles (Category C / Class 2) depending on the licence they hold
These roles often suit drivers who prefer independence and are comfortable working alone for long periods. Many lorry drivers in this area build experience over time and move into higher-paying routes, including night shifts or specialist transport.
However, the role is usually focused on transporting goods, with less involvement beyond driving the vehicle.
Specialist HGV work in infrastructure and utilities
Beyond transport and delivery, there is a growing demand for HGV drivers in specialist roles linked to infrastructure and construction projects.
In these roles, drivers still operate heavy vehicles, but driving is just the start of these roles. The real action starts once the vehicle arrives at the destination. Drivers may work on infrastructure sites, private residences or locations where repairs are required.
At Lanes Group, this type of work often involves:
For many drivers, this offers a more varied alternative to traditional long-distance haulage or multi-drop work. Because the role involves the use of specialist equipment, full training is provided. This provides the opportunity to gain experience in new areas, and open up career opportunities in a secure and steady industry.
We recruit HGV drivers across the UK for a range of roles, including:
Our roles are open to both new entrants and experienced HGV drivers. As long as you hold the required HGV licence, Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) and a digital tachograph card, we provide the training and support needed to build the specialist skills required in the role.
Many drivers join us after completing their HGV training, including their theory test, practical demonstration test and driver certificate of professional competence.
We offer:
Because our work supports infrastructure and utilities, our drivers operate in a sector with consistent demand across the UK, no matter the economic climate. These are services that cannot be paused or automated away - drainage, wastewater and emergency response work will always need skilled people on the ground. A career in HGV driving does not need to follow a single path. Many drivers begin in one type of role and move into others as they gain experience. For example, drivers may start with local deliveries, move into long-haul routes or transition into specialist roles that involve additional responsibilities.
Roles that combine driving with practical work can offer:
At Lanes Group, this often means drivers develop into more technical roles over time, building expertise that goes beyond standard HGV driving jobs.
